County Commissioner Joe Michels and Chairwoman Pearl Kingsbury worked to narrow in on the final details of the project that includes the second of three planned Pioneer Square "blooms" on the South Hill. "This is not just a project to revitalize a neighborhood, this is a project that has to be sustainable, too," Kingsbury said. The board voted unanimously in favor of a resolution to formally approve the project, which will add 25 housing units to the block between Fayette and Brown streets. The county also plans to replace the Fayette Street sidewalk in the block with pavers, and a new public sidewalk along Brown Street. The total project cost is $5.5 million, with $4 million coming from the state's affordable housing initiative. One of the biggest challenges in designing the project, according to Kingsbury, was finding a way to incorporate the historic character of the buildings without hampering the new development.
